Myofunctional Therapy in Calgary

For children who mouth-breathe, tongue-thrust, or still lisp

How your child's mouth works at rest matters more than most people realize. When the tongue rests low instead of on the palate, when breathing happens through the mouth instead of the nose, when swallowing pushes the tongue forward against the teeth, those small patterns shape speech, sleep, eating, and even how the face and jaw grow.

Orofacial myofunctional therapy retrains those patterns: tongue posture, swallowing, nasal breathing, and muscle coordination, so the mouth works the way it was designed to, all day and all night, not just during exercises.

Signs your child may benefit from myofunctional therapy

  • Mouth breathing or snoring

  • Lips apart and mouth open at rest

  • Tongue thrust when swallowing

  • A lisp or unclear speech that hasn't resolved with time

  • Messy or picky eating, or difficulty chewing

  • A history of tongue tie, before or after a release

What myofunctional therapy looks like:

We start with a Parent Consultation and an assessment of how your child breathes, swallows, and rests their tongue. Therapy then builds new patterns step by step, with short daily practice at home, because the goal is what your child's mouth does the other 23 hours of the day. Where it helps, I collaborate with your child's dentist, orthodontist, or ENT so everyone is working toward the same outcome.
